VSG Weight Loss Support Session

This coaching plan is designed to empower VSG clients who have experienced weight gain post-surgery with practical tools, evidence-based strategies, and compassionate support to reclaim control of their health and achieve sustainable weight management outcomes.

90-Minute Session Structure:

Introduction and Goal Setting (10 minutes)

​

  • Welcome and hello, and foster a supportive environment.

  • Discuss the weight gain experience post-VSG surgery.

  • Set specific, measurable, achievable, relevant, and time-bound goals for the session.

 

Understanding Weight Gain Post-VSG (15 minutes)

​

  • Review factors contributing to weight regain after VSG surgery, such as dietary habits, physical activity levels, hormonal changes, and emotional triggers.

  • Discuss the concept of metabolic adaptation and its implications for weight management.

  • Address common misconceptions and challenges associated with weight regain post-VSG.

 

Nutritional Assessment and Planning (20 minutes)

  • Conduct a comprehensive review of your dietary patterns, including food choices, portion sizes, meal frequency, and hydration status.

  • Identify potential dietary pitfalls and areas for improvement.

  • Collaborate to develop a personalised nutrition plan focusing on nutrient-dense foods, balanced macronutrient intake, mindful eating, and portion control.

  • Discuss strategies for managing cravings, emotional eating, and dining out.

 

Physical Activity and Exercise Prescription (20 minutes)

  • Assess your current physical activity level, exercise preferences, and any barriers to regular exercise.

  • Consider post-VSG limitations and safety precautions to tailor an exercise plan to your needs.

  • Incorporate various aerobic, strength training, and flexibility exercises to enhance metabolism, muscle mass, and overall fitness.

  • Provide guidance on setting realistic exercise goals and gradually increasing intensity and duration.

 

Behavioural Strategies for Sustainable Weight Management (20 minutes)

  • Explore your thoughts, feelings, and behaviours related to food, exercise, body image, and self-care.

  • Identify triggers for overeating, emotional eating, and other maladaptive behaviours.

  • To promote positive lifestyle changes, introduce evidence-based behavioural techniques, such as self-monitoring, goal setting, stimulus control, and cognitive restructuring.

  • Encourage self-compassion, resilience, and motivation to overcome setbacks and stay on track with weight management goals.

 

Emotional Support and Coping Strategies (15 minutes)

  • Check emotions and experiences related to weight regain post-VSG surgery.

  • Offer empathetic listening, encouragement, and practical coping strategies for managing stress, anxiety, and emotional triggers without turning to food.

  • Discuss the importance of self-care practices.

 

Action Planning and Follow-Up (10 minutes)

 

  • Summarise key insights, action steps, and resources discussed during the session.

  • Collaboratively develop a concrete action plan outlining specific tasks, timelines, and accountability measures.

  • Schedule follow-up sessions to monitor progress, troubleshoot challenges, and adjust strategies as needed.
